Coffin nails taper inward along the sides and finish with a flat tip, resembling the outline of a coffin or ballet slipper.
Explanation
The shape is also called ballerina. It usually needs medium or long length so the sides can narrow before the squared end. Coffin describes the silhouette only; the structure may be made with acrylic, hard gel, builder gel, soft-gel tips, or sufficient natural nail length.
Why length matters
A clear coffin shape needs enough distance for the side edges to taper before the tip becomes flat. On very short nails, the same filing can look square or remove too much side support. An extension may create the outline more safely, but it also adds product and maintenance.
The technician should keep the centre line straight and the two sides balanced. A flat tip that is too narrow for the length may be vulnerable to impact.
Coffin compared with square and almond
Square nails keep relatively straight, parallel sides and a flat end. Coffin nails taper before reaching their flat end. Almond nails also taper, but their tip is rounded rather than squared.
Ballerina and coffin normally mean the same shape. Some technicians reserve ballerina for a softer or slightly rounded version, so a reference image is useful.
Practical wear and maintenance
Long coffin nails can affect typing, contact lenses, gloves, and work that puts pressure on the free edge. Choose a length that fits daily tasks instead of relying on the proportions of an edited photo.
Enhancements need rebalance or removal as the nail grows. Lifting should not be glued down or picked off, and a crack through the structure should be assessed promptly by a nail professional.
