A skin fade is a fade whose shortest section is shaved to the skin or cut close enough for the scalp to show before the hair blends longer.
Explanation
The fade can sit low, mid, or high, but those labels are not standardized across every barber. Skin fade describes the shortest point; it does not determine the style or length on top. A bald fade and a skin fade usually refer to the same idea, although individual shops may use the words differently.
Low, mid, and high placement
A low skin fade keeps the exposed area closer to the ears and neckline. Mid and high versions move the transition farther up the head and remove more visual weight from the sides. Head shape, density, and the length kept on top change how dramatic each placement looks.
Show the barber where the blend should start and how much scalp you are comfortable exposing. Photos taken from the side and back are more useful than a front-only reference.
Tools and scalp comfort
The barber usually builds the blend with clippers, then may use a trimmer or foil shaver at the shortest section. Very close work can aggravate existing bumps, cuts, or sensitivity. Tell the provider about discomfort and ask whether leaving a minimal clipper length would be more comfortable.
A skin fade is cosmetic grooming. Persistent scalp irritation, infection, or unexplained lesions should be assessed appropriately rather than hidden by the haircut.
Typical cost in Canada
The project's 2026 review of nine-city salon and barbershop menus found barber and clipper cuts commonly advertised at $25 to $55 before tax and gratuity. It did not establish a separate national skin-fade average. Extra detail, beard work, design lines, provider level, and city can change the amount.
Keeping the blend visible
The skin-level section starts to disappear as soon as stubble grows, so a sharp skin fade shows grow-out sooner than a longer taper. A fresh outline alone may not restore the graduated blend. Ask how a cleanup differs from a complete cut at that shop.
