Hair Colour Shades

Copper hair is a warm colour family led by orange-red tones, from light golden copper to deep copper-brown.

Explanation

Copper is not one universal shade. It can be peachy, bright orange, auburn, or mixed with gold and brown. Natural red hair and salon-created copper may need different colour plans. The achievable brightness depends on starting depth, previous colour, hair condition, and whether lightening is appropriate.

Choosing the kind of copper

Golden copper contains more yellow-gold, bright copper emphasizes orange, and copper-brown or auburn keeps more depth. A colour can also lean redder or peachier. Select references at a similar starting depth and view them in natural light.

Ask how vivid the colour will look indoors, whether the root and lengths will match, and whether dimension is part of the result. One word cannot answer those formula questions.

Starting colour and previous dye

Light or medium natural hair may accept copper through colour deposit with little or no pre-lightening. Dark hair may show only a subtle warm reflect unless it is lightened. Dark permanent dye cannot usually be made bright copper by applying a lighter colour over it.

A colourist may use permanent colour, demi-permanent colour, highlights, or a gloss depending on grey coverage, brightness, and maintenance goals. Strand testing is useful when colour history is uncertain.

Maintenance and fading

Warm red-orange pigments often lose vibrancy between appointments. Washing frequency, hot water, heat styling, sun, porosity, and the formula all affect the change. Fading is not identical on every head and may reveal more gold or underlying warmth.

A colour-depositing product can help maintain a selected copper, but the wrong shade may make it too red or too orange. Confirm the maintenance tone and protect fabrics when using pigmented home products as directed.

Frequently asked questions

Can brunette hair become copper without bleach?

Sometimes a warm copper reflect can be added without bleach, especially on lighter natural brown hair. A bright or light copper may require lift, and previously dyed dark hair often needs a different corrective plan.
