Crew Cut

The barber uses clippers or scissor-over-comb through the sides, then shapes the top so it follows the head while retaining controlled length at the front. The connection can be soft and traditional or paired with a more obvious fade.

Hair that stands strongly at the crown or front may need a different length from the reference photo. A little extra top length can give coarse or straight hair room to settle, while curls may need dry-shape checks.

Agree on the shortest guard at the sides, whether the scalp should show, how square or natural the hairline should be, and whether the front must lie flat or lift. Those choices describe the result more clearly than the term crew cut alone.

A matte paste or light cream can control the top, but some crew cuts need no product. Ask the barber to demonstrate the amount rather than assuming a firm gel is necessary.

The project's 2026 review of advertised menus in nine Canadian cities found barber and clipper cuts commonly listed from $25 to $55 before tax and gratuity. The category is broader than crew cuts and is not a national average. A wash, detailed fade, beard work, or senior barber may cost more.

The side shape usually looks grown out before the top becomes difficult to manage. A softer taper can extend the visual grow-out, while a skin fade shows change sooner. If you plan to grow the cut longer, keeping the neckline tidy can help without repeatedly shortening the top.
